South Korean K-pop superstars BTS have launched their world tour, building on the success of their comeback album ARIRANG and a landmark performance in central Seoul. The seven-member group reunited on stage last month after completing mandatory military service, marking their first full-group appearance in years.

Their Seoul performance, held near Gyeongbokgung Palace, drew over 100,000 fans, while a Netflix livestream attracted an estimated 18.4 million viewers globally. The tour will span 85 shows across 34 cities, beginning in Goyang, hometown of leader RM and is expected to rival the scale and revenue of major global tours.

Fans gathered in Goyang despite rainy weather, with the city lit in purple, symbolising BTS’s fanbase, ARMY. Attendees came from around the world, highlighting the group’s international reach. Some fans described the difficulty of securing tickets, while others travelled long distances just to attend.

The tour will visit cities including Tokyo, Manila, Toronto and Buenos Aires, marking the largest number of shows for a South Korean act. Members emphasised the importance of reconnecting with audiences worldwide and experiencing different cultures after their long break.

The album ARIRANG, named after a traditional Korean folk song about longing and separation, reflects the group’s artistic growth and deeper self-exploration. Experts note that BTS has moved beyond themes of youth struggles into more mature and introspective storytelling.

The group continues to break records, becoming the first K-pop act to top the US Billboard 200 for two consecutive weeks with this album, while also dominating global streaming charts. Their sustained success is notable in an industry where many artists struggle to regain momentum after military service.

Analysts say BTS’s impact extends beyond music, contributing significantly to South Korea’s cultural influence worldwide. With tens of millions of followers across platforms, their success is largely attributed to strong fan engagement and a sense of personal connection with their audience, making their global rise uniquely powerful.
